What if we could laugh while we’re cryin’ ~ live while we’re dyin’ ~ smile when we’re mad ~ be happy when we’re sad?

Dream as if you’ll live forever. Live as if you’ll die today.
James Dean

Dream as if you'll live forever...When I moved to Alaska thirty years ago, most of my family was either in California or Massachusetts so in order to stay in touch, we spent a lot of time on the phone. I remember sharing the good and the bad with my little sister Carol over time and for some reason we would always end our conversation with, “But thank God we have our health.”

One day we were sharing stories about how she had to have open-heart surgery due to a birth defect they didn’t find until later in life and I had to have cranial surgery for a depressed skull fracture I sustained after putting a ski through my head while down hill skiing.

When we finished our conversation with our typical, “But thank God we have our health,” we suddenly laughed until we cried because we clearly did not have our health at that moment!  And that was when we realized that the reason we always survived the difficult times in our lives was that we were totally willing to laugh through them.

There is a man named Norman Cousins who after years of prolonged pain from a serious illness, claims to have cured himself with a self-invented regimen of laughter and vitamins. In his 1979 book Anatomy of an Illness, Cousins describes how watching comedic movies helped him recover.

What are some of the things that are troubling you today? What could you do to help you laugh while you’re cryin’?

  • Watch a movie that you know gets you laughing.
  • Call on a friend or family member who always seems to crack you up.
